Chapter 5 Society and inequality

Chinese society was shaped by the actions of the state. Their emperor created an academy where officials were trained into scholars this academy then had 30,000 students who were tested with writing tests and then assigned as officials in different grades. this system wanted those who were richer than the rest so they could continue on with their education and not eventually drop out. When the word rich or wealth comes up it usually means people who own land. These land owners were a big part of the Chinese society. Even though land owners were important a big part of china's population were peasants. There were different levels of peasants. Those who were able to survive with what they had  and things they could sell and the others who could barely survive. Merchants weren't seen as productive people, they were not appreciated. The high class people saw them as unproductive because they believed the money that they made was shameful because they sold the work of others. Mercha...

Chapter 4 and "Serving is different from helping"

Confucius and Laozi had teachings that introduced Daiosm and Confucianism. In india Hinduism is what was most known there. Later on Gautama created a different religion in India called Buddhism. Confucius thought that he was the answer to the disorder that was going in China. His students collected his teaching to build on them and create the idea of Confucianism. This idea believed that having a better education made a person better. His ideas mentioned that people have no idea of what the after life may be since we barely have an idea of what the life now is like. Daoism was different because it relied more on nature. this idea wanted people to step away from society, and politics and look at the life in nature. The elite chinese are the people who took more of a perspective on this. The text mentions that Daoism complemented Confucianism instead of contradicting it. Hinduism was big on males. They believed women were weak men just turned into women. Men married girls a lot younger t...

Chapter 3 Documents

GERMANIA Germans were all not mixed with any other race in any way. The text explains it as aboriginal. They enjoyed celebrating their God and the God's son, Tuisco and Mannus. They made them the main focus of their race. As if they were the founders. They brought their past back through songs, it was their only way. They all pretty much look the same with the same feature, hair color, eye color, and appearance. Their priests are the only ones who can reprimand people. The German men have a great amount of fear women being killed and left there on the ground. they fear this for their own women. These people spend a lot of their time in battle and respond to their chief with a lot of respect. On their free time when they are not in battle they spend their time hunting and still give themselves time to sleep a lot and eat a lot more. They do not live in cities they live all over the place, scattered and apart from others. They live in their own space to be safe from any type of acci...

Chapter 8 (China and the World)

China did not let itself fall like the Roman Empire did, instead they were able to get their unity back under a new dynasty, the Sui dynasty. They created that unity with a bunch of canals that stretched about a thousand miles. They connected the top and bottom parts of China. China becomes the  country that is the most urbanized in the world. This country was big on iron works. They supplied many of the things that were made out of metal. Coal was big in China as well. It provided the country with energy to heat their homes and be able to cook. The down side to the coal was that it was bad for the environment. During the "golden age" the women of this time were not treated very ideally. These women were not respected, except those of the elite class. Because of the confuscianism ideas coming back, women during the time were thought of as very less after being treated very well before confucinism came back. This created a separation of men and women in all things in life. It ...

Chapter 10

Christianity becomes a European phenomenon for more than a thousand years. This religion expanded out to Western Europe and Russia. It spread extremely quickly just like the Islam religion did. Syria and Persia had a more concentrated population that were christians. There were Christian leaders in certain places that fought to make sure that they could be given the right to practice their religion they would pay to practice in private with a tax. Some Christians were forced to wear clothes that made them look different. Some of their churches were even burned down, and they had their villages destroyed. In Africa they were defensive about the spread of Islam. They did not really agree on expanding it. In Egypt Christianity was their religion. Later on some Egyptians converted to Islam. A minority of christians still existed in the area even though it was beginning to become a Arab and Muslim country. The contractions of these countries made Europe the center of Christendom. The muslim...

Intro to part two & ch 3

Globalization of of civilization spread throughout the planet, finding more people and more bigger territories. The first civilizations had very powerful societies but they were very vulnerable. Other civilizations began to fall after that for example Egypt due to invasion. Even though they fell the community still remained strong. The first wave of civilizations was not much different from the second one and the third one. There were not much technological advances. People of lower class didn't want to invest their time into new production because they were certain that they would be taken over by the higher class. China was able to make technological changes for example, machinery, pistons, and even the wheelbarrow.  Empires are just states. Eurasian empires include Persia, Greece, Rome, China, and India. These empires shared many problems. They had their highs but sooner or later they would collapse. The Persians had the largest empire. They were ruled by a monarch who lived ...
