Chapter 4 and "Serving is different from helping"

Confucius and Laozi had teachings that introduced Daiosm and Confucianism. In india Hinduism is what was most known there. Later on Gautama created a different religion in India called Buddhism. Confucius thought that he was the answer to the disorder that was going in China. His students collected his teaching to build on them and create the idea of Confucianism. This idea believed that having a better education made a person better. His ideas mentioned that people have no idea of what the after life may be since we barely have an idea of what the life now is like. Daoism was different because it relied more on nature. this idea wanted people to step away from society, and politics and look at the life in nature. The elite chinese are the people who took more of a perspective on this. The text mentions that Daoism complemented Confucianism instead of contradicting it. Hinduism was big on males. They believed women were weak men just turned into women. Men married girls a lot younger than them. Buddhism had a big reflect on hinduism. For example how ordinary life is an illusion. Buddhism had a wide spread in India an outside of India. Judaism belonged to the Hebrews.


Helping requires using your strength and you're helping people who are not as strong. Serving is different because it is equality, the text says that it is a relationship among equals. Serving will not have you owe something to someone in the future instead you'll feel pleased you helped someone out.  With helping you get the feeling that they may owe you something and vic versa if someone were to help you.

Chapter 6 Commonalities and Variations

Regarding the world's population at the beginning of the common era the Americas was home to 5% of the world's population. They were less developed than the people in Africa and especially those people in Eurasia. Africa had different societies, cultures and civilizations but they had interactions between them. South of Egypt were Nubian civilizations who traded with the people of Egypt. At one point the Nubians took over Egypt and were rulers of it for one century. When that didn't work out Nubian settles on the city of Meroe. Meroe was part of a monarchy. The people there traded with others north of the Nile river. Meroe was a continuations of an old African civilization and Axum was the blossom of a new one. They did very well with their agriculture and were successful with their wheat, barley, millet, and teff. Christianity was part of Axum and it was linked religiously to Egypt. Intro to part one and chapter 1

I found it interesting to read that history does not take place only on earth, but also as a part of the planet's history. I found upsetting that we are in the middle of a sixth extinction caused by climate change which is being produced by human actions. The people living in this earth are causing extinction themselves. I also found it interesting that 21st century chimps in the wild are able to master the same skills as their ancestors did a million years ago. And finally that the people of Australia were able to develop 250 languages.
